Boxcar Services is more than just a leading provider of railcar leasing and financing solutions. We're also in the vanguard of developing and implementing next-generation solutions for the railroad and rail-based shipping industries.

Our origins hail to our background in the railroad industry. For years we knew there could be better ways to help railroads and their customers get more for their investment dollar, increase safety, and enhance productivity.

Since 2000, we have developed a number of solutions that are now on the rails across North America. With each project, we focused on improving rail safety, better profitability for railroads and shippers, and defined ROI.

Excess-height automotive parts boxcars

Issue: The shipper wishes to save money in transporting auto parts, particularly compared to the cost of over-the-road truck solutions.

BCSX Solution: Working with the shipper's specifications, BXCX provided research and design services, resulting in a retrofit program for raising the roofs on 86-foot Plate F boxcars. With this program, the shipper will be able to convert six (6) truck shipments and rack loads into a single railcar movement.

The savings are multi-fold:

  • The client saves significant transportation costs
  • Business has been converted from trucking to railroads
  • Local roadway congestion is reduced

Numerous design issues required resolution to make this project a success, including:

  • Clearance
  • Heavier door
  • Center of gravity
  • Ride quality
  • Rebuilding issues

This project is in its building phase, with a total of 31 cars in development. The shipper is very pleased with the preliminary results and participating railroads will realize enhanced revenues from these movements having been taken away from trucks.

Innovative railcar door-guide system

Issue: Shipper wanted to enhance worker safety and reduce workers compensation and liability claims associated with malfunctioning doors on 86-foot auto-parts boxcars.

BCSX Solution: Working in partnership with Detroit Edison, BXCX provided the engineering designs while DTE provided the retrofit facility and personnel at its Grand Island, Nebraska, location. Union Pacific provided the railcar for retrofit. Designs include:

  • Top Hung Plug Door Retrofits
  • Slider Door Top Hung Retrofits
  • New-Concept Door Design for new railcar builds

The car is now in use in GM railcar pool service between Fairfax (Kansas City), Kansas and Matamoras, Mexico.
